Android Phones at risk

PROBLEM:

By simply receiving a text message with attached video, a hacker can completely take over your Android based phone. The video does not need to be viewed, simply opening the text message will load the attacking code. People using the Google “Hangouts” app are especially vulnerable as this app pre-loads video thereby infecting the phone in the background.

RECOMMENDATION:

  • Stop using the Google “Hangouts” app until a patch is released for the app or the Android OS.
  • If you receive a text with video attached we recommend that you delete the text message WITHOUT opening the text message.
  • If you receive a text message from an unknown number delete the message without opening it.
